What to wear pumpkin picking
Stay comfortable when the weather changes.
What to wear for pumpkin picking in autumn, including footwear, layers, wet-weather ideas and practical tips for children, buggies and accessible visits.

Start with the right footwear
Pumpkin patches are outdoor autumn spaces, so the ground can change quickly after rain. Closed shoes with a good grip are the minimum sensible choice; wellies or waterproof boots are a better option when the ground is wet or muddy.
The current Pumpkin Village guidance specifically recommends wellies if it has rained in the days before your visit.
Wear layers you can add or remove
Essex autumn weather can move from cool and breezy to surprisingly mild. A T-shirt or light base layer, warm mid-layer and weather-resistant outer layer gives you more flexibility than one very heavy coat.
For children, a spare layer in the car can be useful if clothes get damp or muddy.
Useful things to bring
- A waterproof jacket if showers are possible.
- Gloves or a hat for colder sessions, particularly later in the season.
- A reusable bag or suitable way to carry smaller purchases.
- A change of footwear or a boot liner for the journey home after a muddy day.
- Your booking confirmation and a payment card or contactless device - Pumpkin Village is cashless.
Mobility, buggies and access planning
If you use a wheelchair, mobility aid or buggy and need to know what conditions will be like, contact the team before travelling. They can help you check routes, surfaces, parking and facilities for the date of your visit.
